Mount Eerie - Lost Wisdom

Mount Eerie – Lost Wisdom
P.W. Elverum & Sun, LTD., 2008
Acquired: Love Garden, New, 2008
Price: $15

This is Phil Elverum's best record since The Glow Pt 2 in my opinion, and he accomplishes this with the help of former Eric's Trip bassist/singer (and solo artist) Julie Doiron and electric guitarist Fred Squire. Ultimately this is something that is sonically spare yet full of the trademark warmth Phil Elverum injects into every record he touches. Squire's electric guitar cuts through the acoustic moodiness that Elverum and Doiron capture song after song. Doiron proves to be perhaps Elverum's perfect harmonizer. Their voices fit so perfectly together. The record is haunting, like a soundtrack for the house burning down on the cover. It's more focused than No Flashlight, or maybe it's just more sonically diverse. Granted, I love No Flashlight but this is a small masterpiece. Every song is good, every song is memorable, and this is one of the gems of my collection. “You Swan Go On” makes my eyes water every time I heard it, as does “O My Heart.” The whole thing feels like fall, a record to put on on a gloomy day. One to hide under the covers with.
