The New Pornographers – Twin Cinema
Matador, 2005
Acquired: Love Garden, New, 2005
Price: $14
This was my favorite record of 2005. I tend to choose my favorite record based on how many times I listen to it, how it effects my every day life, and if it provides a soundtrack to the better part of the year. Specific events in 2005 correlate with songs on this album. That was the year I went to California. I remember driving North on I-35 a lot that summer, too. Anyway, this is the New Pornographers best record so far. It's basically one giant hell yeah. “Sing Me Spanish Techno” never fails to move me (or, better yet, make me move my ass). “The Bleeding Heart Show” is responsible for my current relationship. Funny story there, actually. When I met Jenny she'd just started getting into the New Pornographers and that was her favorite song. So, after we'd pseudo-dated for a week and she dumped me, the next day we all went to the lake. She was there, and that night there was a party. We had a good talk on the car ride back and I outlined how I wanted to stay friends. That night I gave her a New Pornographers mix CD and then we ended up dating and it's been that way for like 9 months. Win. On the other hand, this is also a record completely associated with Annie, given that the New Pornographers were her favorite band and we spent hours listening to this one, going to their shows together, etc. At the same time, the New Pornographers are one of my favorite bands so whatever, I don't know. This record still rules!
