Jens Lekman – Night Falls Over Kortedala
Secretly Canadian, 2008
Acquired: Love Garden, New, 2008
Price: $14
As mentioned in the previous post, Jens knocked this one out of the park. This is some next level indiepop shit. Like the rest of Jens Lekman's records, this one's sweet, sad, funny, and just utterly delightful without being fluffy. For instance, “Your Arms Around Me” is a love story about a girl taking him to the ER after cutting off the tip of his finger while slicing an avocado. It's humorous, but oh so sweet! That's a sweet experience though, taking someone you love to the ER. If you've never done it, someday you will and it will be sweet minus all of the blood. The next track, “Shirin,” is about him getting his haircut and speculating about his Iraqi stylist's history. Who else does that shit? No one. Matt just walked in and asked what this pussy shit was I was listing to and I told him it was Jens Lekman. Anyway, I love this shit and not just because I'm a sissy. It's imbued with a classic sort of Sarah Records twee-pop yet the use of samples makes it sound incredibly modern in a surprisingly organic way. This record finds Lekman mostly telling stories, mostly love stories too. There's the previous avocodo-cutting tale, and my favorite “A Postcard to Nina,” in which Lekman pretends to be a lesbian's boyfriend while having dinner with her parents. It's witty, and wonderful, but it's also a damn good story! Anyway, this was one of my top 5 records of 2008 and I listened to it a lot with Jenny when we first started dating as a trick to make her fall in love with me. It worked.
