The Ladybug Transistor – The Albemarle Sound
Merge, 1999
Acquired: Lawrence Antique Mall, Used, 2007
Price: $6
This was purchased on a magical day at the Lawrence Antique Mall, a day when I found a bunch of old indie rock records for super cheap. This is an excellent psych-pop record a la Elephant 6 and it's a nice bookend to the KISS records, pairing nicely with the Kinks record that came before those. I'm pretty sure this is their best record, or it is at least the only one I've ever listened to. The song “Swimming” is the jam here, and I'm pretty positive it was ripped off by some band not too long ago, at least the opening piano line. I think it may have been the Concretes, or some other Swedes. The record is lovely, for sure, however the hooks could be a bit sharper and while they're all excellent craftsmen (and craftswomen), it ends up feeling a little slight. That is to say, it's a little forgettable.
